It’s Thanksgiving here in the US, and despite Black Friday there’s still a lot for poker players to be thankful for. Let’s take the time to reflect on some of those things:
- Egg Nog — Sorry, but that always tops my Thanksgiving “Things to be Thankful For” list. It’s just so damn tasty!
- Smart People — In reading the news about the hearings over online gaming, I was struck by the fact that their seemed to be some smart people working on the problem—on both sides of the issue. I’m not usually able to say that. But I read the testimony of Dr. Rachel Volberg, who is definitely not a proponent of online gambling, and thought she brought up some very good points—not to eliminate online gambling—but while regulating it, to provide help and support for gambling addicts, and to study the effect of online gaming on society. Good reading, and I suggest anyone who supports or objects to online gambling read the entire testimony.
- Live Poker — These days, it’s actually difficult to live more than an hour and a half from a poker room. If you do, I recommend you start a game. People play poker everywhere. Oh, and they’re terrible at it.
- Less Poker on TV — Actually one of the good things to come out of Black Friday. All the programs that were floated by FT and PStars have been canceled and there’s less of a glut of poker on TV and less backlash from oversaturation.
- Alternate Games — It’s becoming easier and easier to find other games besides Holdem spread in card rooms. Keep an eye out for these games because they can often be very good.
Despite everything that’s happened this year, it is still a very good time to be a poker player. This holiday season, go out and play in the games that are now so plentiful, bountiful, and safe. And have a profitable and thanks-worthy Thanksgiving.
